How to remove Get Windows 10 reminder and tray item

If you are using Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, you probably notice that in the past few months you have a new Windows icon on your system trays. Sometimes it will pop up with a notification bubble and prompt you to upgrade to Windows 10. Even worse, sometimes it will pop up with a big dialog box to ensure that it gets your attention.

When you click on it, if your machine is compatible, it will show you that “Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10”

Why should you upgrade? Microsoft said that Windows 10 is “Designed for speed”. Hmmm… we are not 100% convinced as many of our customers complained about the speed of their computers after the upgrade.

While Windows 10 has many improvements over its predecessors, for many of our customers, it might not be the appropriate choice because it could create a very bad user experience. Firstly, it will require our customers to learn to use the new system. Secondly, Windows 10 might run a lot slower than Windows 7/8 on the same hardware. The combination of having a slower computer and an unfamiliar environment will surely get people fired up!

So for those who wants to stick to their current Windows 7/8/8.1, what can you do to remove the annoying “Get Windows 10” reminder?

Removing the “Get Windows 10” reminder

Before you start, please make sure you save all open files and close all running applications before proceeding.

1) Run “Windows Update”. One way to do it is to click on Start “the Windows Globe”, in the search box, type windows update. Click on “Windows Update” under Programs

2) Windows will open the “Windows Update” manager. In this windows go to view installed updates by clicking on “Installed Updates” (bottom left hand side)

3) In the list of installed updates, wait for it to finish loading the list.

Once it finishes loading, look for “Update for Microsoft Windows (KB3035583)”. This is the update where it installed a piece of software that constantly reminds you that you should upgrade to Windows 10. Since it doesn’t do anything else, you can remove it without causing any issues with your computer. The best way to look for it is to order it by name and then look for the last few characters “83” of the update name.

4) To uninstall the update, right click on the item and click Uninstall.

5) As usual, Windows will ask you “Are you sure you want to uninstall this update?”. Click “Yes” to continue.

It will take a few moments to uninstall the update

6) Once it is done, click “Restart Now” to restart the computer.

Great you have successfully uninstalled the “Get Windows 10” reminder!

Ensuring it will not come up again

Now to ensure that it will not prompt you again in the near future, you need to make sure Windows does not re-install that update for you. To do this, you will need to hide the update.

A) Go to Windows Update manager as mentioned before. Click on Start “the Windows Globe”, in the search box, type windows update. Click on “Windows Update” under Programs

B) In the Windows Update manager, click on “Check for updates” (left hand side)

C) In the list of update, look for “Update for Microsoft Windows (KB3035583)”. Right click on it and select “Hide update”

Well done! You have successfully uninstalled the “Get Windows 10” reminder and ensure that it will not appear again! :)
